While walking, I pause for a moment and look up at a roof. The semi-three-dimensional tile patterns at the edge of the eaves catch the light, revealing their forms more clearly. Interpreting the meaning embedded in each pattern offers a quiet moment of rest and reflection. This mobile was conceived by imagining the culture in which ancient ancestors interpreted and appreciated roof tile patterns. As the first piece in the Weathering series mobile DIY kits, a lotus-patterned sumaksae roof tile from the Unified Silla period was selected. Like a lotus blooming pure from the mud, the lotus motif symbolizes purification. It carries the wishes of our ancestors for a calm mind and a peaceful life. A closer look reveals that every element of the lotus—from stamens to petals and receptacles—is expressed differently, adding to its quiet fascination.
